Air Tanzania to resume service

DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA – Cash strapped Air Tanzania was set to resume flights at the weekend after government released an additional TShs2 billion (about US$1.3 million) to pull the national carrier out of a financial doldrums.

Earlier in the week, David Mattaka, the chief executive of Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) held a crisis meeting with officials from the ministries of infrastructure development and finance and economic affairs to make the request for the funds.
Mattaka said then the flights would be back by end of the week if the government released the TShs2 billion as part of a bail-out plan for the ‘cash-troubled’ state-run airline.

Kirenga Ndemino, the deputy director of air transport in the infrastructure development ministry announced the release of the money last Thursday as legislators from the parliamentary infrastructure development committee toured the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) facilities at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA).
