Gold tops Uganda mineral occurrence

KAMPALA, UGANDA – An airborne geophysical survey of Uganda’s unexploited mineral resources has indicated that gold is the most widely occurring mineral.

Data released last week by the ministry of energy and mineral development says initial results of the survey show that Uganda is endowed with gold in southwestern Uganda, which was zoned as Block 7.

Block 7 is endowed with gold and diamond in Kigezi and in the Buhweju hills in Bushenyi district.

There is tin, wolfram and nickel in Kikagate. Other areas under Block 7 include Kasese with copper and cobalt.
Preliminary results from the airborne survey undertaken since December 2006 which were released at the start of 2008 found occurrences of gold in Block 1 covering the districts of Tororo, Busia, Bugiri and Iganga in eastern Uganda.

Block 1 also possesses iron ore and phosphates in Sukuru hills and zinc, limestone, magneticulite and hermiculite, all in Tororo district. Other minerals in Block 1 are zinc, lead and copper.
