| Lately I have been anxiously watching President Obama grapple with his first 100 days in office. Seeing Tom Daschle withdraw his bid to serve as Health Secretary was heartbreaking not because of the former Democratic Majority Leader but because he was due to serve a government we all, probably, want to succeed. That is also where UNAA Times is today. Many contributors and strategic partners want this publication to succeed not because they stand to reap any tangible benefits – although that would be nice – but because there is a certain audacity and overwhelming optimism that comes from hope of something better and more fulfilling. |
But as we celebrate the numerous achievements of our diaspora community I am reminded of those particular ones that have hit home like Omega Bugembe Okello’s nomination at the NAACP image awards and Kassim Ouma’s long awaited movie release. When you know the people personally seeing them attain major successes in their respective careers gives you the impetus to follow your dreams.
I know what fuels hope and what it can do for people who left their homes for this great nation. I received a very enthusiastic email from my friends in British Columbia – fellow African immigrants – who started their own Canadian organization. One of the things they said was that UNAA Times online has the potential to provide [people] a sense of belonging with human interest stories. But what they said especially about the UNAA TV was even more inspirational for us as we strive to find the content to keep our TV audience ever more engaged. Their compliments were more fulfilling given that we do this on a part time basis.
As an Editor, you wear many hats. You vet stories, look around for ideas, decide who you want to work with, and find resources. Sometimes, you are fortunate because the Good Lord has sent you the energy and route to go on for another day. And then there are the days when things do not run smoothly.
But when you find that a thing you thought was just a passion has become real to others, you sit back, smile and prepare for another day and hope the news and features you present will change some one’s life. Because of that, UNAA Times has no choice but to follow that age old appendage: The Show Must Go On!
Thank you ever so much for reading – and see you on the other side.
