Afrigo Band | OUR DEPARTED ICON | CHARLES SEKYANZI | 1949-2009

charlesIt is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of an internationally renowned music icon with a career that has spanned over four decades. He will be missed by his family and fans the world over. He is survived by his lovely wife, children and many siblings. Sekyanzi was born in April 1949, the first-born child in the family of late Mr. Evelitius Polycarp Mutagubya   of Kasubi, Kyadondo. He got involved in music at an early age, for many years he sung in the Namirembe cathedral choir where he horned his harmonizing skills and alto tone signature that he became famous for. He was also adept at playing the trumpet.

His colleague Moses Matovu lamented, “We have been childhood friends since 1967, and we bonded so strongly that we became brothers, out of which the Cranes Band was launched. On November 1st, 1975, we launched The Afrigo Band. He has been a dedicated member of the Afrigo Band, involved in all compositions and performances but these are some of his own compositions: Akola bwenkanya, Musa, Eneyisa, Nnemedwa, Rose Gguma, and Onemye. He has been very influential in the music industry and his death is a big blow to all of us. On such days, we are reminded of   our other fallen colleagues:  Rashid Musoke, Paul Serumaga, Godfrey Mwabala, Tony Sengo, Mansur Bulegeya Akiki, and Fred Kigozi. May their souls rest in peace! I extend my gratitude to the fans and friends who have stood with us throughout our career. Special thanks to those who have been there for Sekyanzi throughout this trying   time of illness. We have lost one of the greatest singers the nation of Uganda has ever witnessed.  I have not only lost a fellow musician or a friend, but a brother. He will always be missed” Moses Matovu co-founder, The Afrigo Band, Uganda.

What his siblings remember him for the most was his love for family, kindness and wealth of wisdom that he always imparted at a drop of a dime. His wit and incomparable sense of humor will be sorely missed.  “He was truly a great father, a loving husband, a caring big brother, a master at peace-making and an icon that made our family proud” said his youngest sister Lydia Natoolo Mutagubya, U.S.A. During the many tours that the band made throughout the world, Sekyanzi made it a point to connect with family making each of us feel special.  Special thanks goes out to all of those who extended a hand of warmth and comfort during his final days especially his family, the Afrigo Band and fans the world over.

He was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kasubi, Kyadondo. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:  Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:12-13, King James Version.  May God bless, comfort those that mourn and May his soul rest in eternal peace!

Thank you,

The Family of the Late Charles Sekyanzi
