Letter from the Editor | Ronnie Mayanja | November 2009

ronnieThe Halloween season is now gone and the ghosts of Salem are back in their caves. For us here in Boston the temperatures are beginning to dip and very soon the year will be over. The trees and leaves are now changing colors; the last reminder one needs to know that winter will soon be upon us.

However for those planning on traveling back home for Christmas you should have booked your tickets by now. Of course those staying in the US don’t forget the biggest US holiday of the year when all American households celebrate the feast of the Thanksgiving.

We at UNAA Times will also be giving thanks for the success story this blog has now become with an audience that accesses our news blog in more than 100 countries across the globe.

During the month October UNAA Times Online completed it’s transition process that saw us unveil our new look in accordance with the industry standards. It is therefore our hope that the new interface will help you the readers find those articles of interest with ease. In this regard we apologise for any downtime this caused as we transitioned between servers.

Another aspect you should have noticed has been the newly revamped UNAA Times TV that we hope will help present those Ugandan stories that many of you would have missed on the news circuit. Talking about television we would like to invite i-reporters to share those breaking news stories that transpire within your community. We shall attribute these stories and also post them on all the social networking websites we are currently affiliated to with the names of those reporting.

November 2 will be election day here in the US. This is always an interesting time for me as I observe how Americans citizens conduct their elections. They will support their candidates right from their door step down to the metropolitan areas holding placards of their candidates while showing respect for their opponents as stipulated by the first amendment that defends every one’s right to freedom of speech. It is this kind of respect and discipline for dissenting political views that we as Africans and Ugandans in particular should adopt for our fragile democracy during the run up to the 2011 elections.

Finally as I conclude, remember to celebrate the people that affect your life while they are still alive. This past weekend I was among the many who showed up at the box office to pay tribute to Micheal Jackson’s iconic creations in Kenny Ortega’s much anticipated “This Is It” movie highlighting moments and interviews from Micheal Jackson’s rehearsals.

It was interesting to see that a full movie of two hours was created out of rehearsed material. When watching the movie, flashback moments came to me of when the living Micheal Jackson was demonised by the media only to be celebrated in death. I kept thinking to myself and praying to God that I would rather be celebrated in life than in death. Surely the King of Pop as he became known the world over deserved a better send off than creative talent. He was judged by those who did not even know him and extorted of millions of dollars. This should be a lesson to all of us to judge not lest we be judged. As for those who wish to celebrate my success please do while I am with you today because who knows their appointment with death!!

Enjoy your Turkey Time.

Happy thanksgiving!

Ronnie Mayanja
