Deadly Landslide in Uganda | The Search for Survivors Continues

Rescuers search for survivors buried underneath the mud.

A landslide forced by a seven hour downpour engulfed this village in eastern Uganda.

Parts of Uganda and Kenya have sustained rain for much of the past two months, which is usually a dry period between rainy seasons.

A government response team is on the ground and the Red Cross has sent doctors, while police and volunteers are also helping in the rescue.

Government officials have put the death toll at around 80, with up to 300 feared buried.

Earth movers and other equipment that could aid the rescue effort are still unable to reach the remote area surrounded by trees and shrubs.

Meanwhile rains in the region are expected to intensify over the coming days, and rescuers fear more landslides.
