Dear Readers, it is another start to a new month and we in the Northern Hemisphere have one more month to go before the end of this cold winter. The one thing worth noting at this time has been the change in weather patterns.
While in Kampala, Uganda, I experienced some of my hottest days in recent years. It was blistering heat that left you drenched in sweat and quite dehydrated. Then I flew into DC early February and was greeted by over 30 inches of snow, something that the nation’s capital had not experienced. Federal government was literally shut down for an entire week according to press reports.
Today Uganda is experiencing massive landslides and hundreds have been left buried alive. Last month it was the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile that left hundreds dead. These natural calamities are indicators that perhaps the gods must be crazy, that is if you believe in superstition. But to some of us who are people of faith, it is perhaps a moment to focus on those things that matter more in life like giving thanks to God for allowing us to see another day.
On a lighter note, it is a year of mid term elections here in the US. And to this regard I was a proud attendee of a town hall meeting where the incumbent Governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick met the voters in a Boston suburb of Dorchester recently. I was quite energized and felt refreshed as voters engaged their Governor on issues pertinent to their well being as residents of the commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Talking about elections, next year Ugandans will also go to the polls in what is anticipated to be a very decisive election. This will be President Museveni’s fourth term bid having been in power for the past 24 years. The election also serves as a turning point because it will bring new players to Uganda’s political playing field especially those born during the post independence era like the newly appointed Norbert Mao, the Gulu LC Chairman. It is my hope that Uganda will be able to experience a peaceful transition without recourse to civil war.
Finally stay tuned for some new video footage that we shall be adding to our revamped UNAA Times TV very soon courtesy of our partners at Media Plus News.
As always thank you for all your support and please help us spread the word to all the corners of the world where Ugandans live and congregate.
Sincerely,
Ronnie Mayanja
