Dear Readers, It’s spring time and that means we in the North East can finally get a break from the miserable weather that has interrupted our way of life for nearly two weeks.During one particular week, it rained for three straight days flooding entire communities and submerging homes of some already struggling home owners.
As the saying goes, seasons change! And very soon it will be summer a time when we should “jiggy” all the way to the beach!
As we begin this new month, we continue to reflect on the tragedy that struck at the heart of Buganda when the Kasubi royal tombs or locally known as Masiiro, a UNESCO world heritage and burial site for four of Buganda’s departed Kings was destroyed in a fire consuming artifacts and an entire century worth of history.
With the on going standoff between the central government and the Buganda government the destruction of the royal tombs was just another straw that has many conspiracy theorists speculating that this one particular event may be the game changer come 2011 Presidential elections. With the Baganda resolute in their allegiance to the Kabaka and the preservation of their heritage, the stage is now set for what many are calling Uganda’s defining moment.
In Boston, a city that perhaps could be described as the strongest constituency of Baganda in the diaspora, several meetings were called to help secure financial support for the Buganda Kingdom in their quest to preserve their identity as a people. Although some called for radical measures to help end the persecution of Buganda, others believed that a peaceful approach that constitutes dialogue was the best way for Buganda and the Central government to heal their fragile relationship.
On a lighter note, the UNAA board of directors voted for Denver as the host City for UNAA 2011 Convention, beating Dallas out of the race. This voting experience reminded me of what lobbying and lobbyists do to get their votes through the US congress. It was a spirited campaign that had many of us board members bombarded with several calls, from people selling us their bids and proposals for a chance to host the UNAA 2011 Convention. Some may ask why so early on in the process, but to ensure proper planning and preparations, this is definitely a good exercise that sets this twenty year old organization apart.
Finally as people of faith, this month we also commemorate the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ who died on the cross at Calvary.
Like the movie The Passion of the Christ by Mel Gibson, I pray that we use this time as an opportunity to reflect on our lives and how to become better Christians. And ofcourse as the words of that old time classic hymn would say “Because he lives I can face tomorrow.”
Happy Easter!
Sincerely,
Ronnie Mayanja
