Dear Readers, Welcome to July, the second warmest month in the Northern Hemisphere. Here in the US the month of July is very special in a way because Americans commemorate the day that the declaration of Independence was made on July 4th 1776.
For over 200 years Americans and immigrants together have come to celebrate the American Revolution and the brave men that fought to oppose tyranny from the British Monarch, the same values they fought to uphold then have now become symbols of what America stands for today; freedom, greater opportunity and success based on merit and not a social class.
Some might wonder why immigrants tend to feel a greater sense of identity with this great nation but the answer perhaps lies in America’s ability to embrace all people irrespective of race, creed, tribe or religion. That is perhaps the reason why more and more people choose to migrate to the United States in pursuit of happiness and the American dream.
For me the celebration of American resilience could not have come at a better time than during the World Cup match when the US took on Algeria, that summed up the American determination and ability to succeed against all odds. Therefore as you join in the singing of that ‘star spangled banner’ this fourth of July be reminded that ‘In God We Trust’ to see America overcome the Oil spills and defeat off her enemies both local and overseas.
Back to our calender this year, we congratulate the Uganda Catholic Community in Boston for putting up a spectacular Uganda Martyrs Day Celebration. This year we saw leading politicians[Presidential aspirants] from Uganda show up to grace the occasion lending credence to the fact that this has become one of the major highlights celebrated by the Ugandan community here in the US annually.
The other event whose count down has now began is the 22nd UNAA Convention that will be taking place in Washington DC on labor day weekend [Sept 2nd - 5th]. If you have not yet booked your place be reminded that the rooms are filling up first and we have so far surpassed our previous records in terms of early registrations and hotel room bookings. This year’s convention will certainly be a sell out inspite of all the resistance and negative PR from some quarters.
As I conclude I will draw your attention back to the World Cup that has left even the staunchest supporters in shock and awe at both the outcome of some matches, the refereeing decisions and the early departure of some of the favorite teams. South America proved yet again that they have mastered the art and skill of soccer by advancing eight teams to the quarter final stage. As for Africa our only hope Ghana was ‘DENIED’ a place in the semi-finals after a disappointing show by many of Africa’s World Cup giants like Cameroon and Nigeria we can only wait for another four years. But as they say in the game of soccer its NOT over until the final whistle and perhaps a surprise awaits us during the final match of what was a spectacular World Cup out of Africa.
Happy Independence Day!
