Letter from the Editor | Ronnie Mayanja | August 2010

Dear Readers, welcome to our August edition of UNAA Times. July is now history but what an eventful month it was for my country Uganda, that experienced its very own [9/11 attacks] which came on July 11th [7/11] as the world gathered to watch the grand finale of what had been an incident free World Cup out of Africa. Somali based Al-Shabab terrorists with links to Al-Qeada, came through on their promise to attack Uganda which has contributed the largest contingent of AU peace keepers in Somalia. By the time the attacks where over 74 people lay dead and scores were injured.

It was a grim reminder of the August 1998 US embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es salaam that saw over 212 people killed and over 4000 injured in what was the first major attack by the Al Qeada terrorists on US interests in Africa. The use of suicide bombers as the new weapon of choice by the Islamic radicals and their radicals teachings must be prevented as terrorists are known to prey on the weak to advance their Jihad cause. It was therefore quite surprising that our very own Ugandan citizens were named as accomplices in this tragedy. Our prayers and support go out to all the families of those affected by this heinous crime. It’s our prayer that God will heal our land and cause this dark chapter in the history of our nation to lead to a rebirth of some sort and a new call of nationalism within our people.

August for me carries alot of purpose and meaning; not only is it the month I was born and as such I celebrate a birthday but also for us in the northern hemisphere it marks the end of summer heat/holiday as we prepare for the fall weather. In the US it is also the official back to school calendar month as some opt to undergo intellectual liberation by enrolling in the various institutions of higher learning.

As a community our comrades the Banyakigezi will also be converging at the Westin Hotel in Boston for their 9th annual convention from 26th-28th August and we encourage as many that can to show up and support their cause.[http://www.unaatimes.com/icob-2010/]

After their convention ends, perhaps what has been described as one of the biggest Ugandan conventions ever will also be starting on September 2nd-5th 2010 at the Gaylord resort and convention in Washington DC. Our August 15th registration deadline is first approaching but there is still an opportunity to be a part of this UNAA Convention that has beaten all previous UNAA records in terms of number of attendees and hotel room bookings. As the area UNAA Board representative I wanted to use this opportunity to welcome you all to our nation’s capital as we celebrate our cultural heritage and rekindle those old friendships.

Finally, UNAA Times Online together with all our affilliates [www.soreel-mayas.com], and [www.galiwango.com] would like to appreciate all the support of our fan base and advertisers in our quest to promote and market our motherland.

For God and My Country.

Sincerely,

Ronnie Mayanja
