Ugandan woman faces gallows in syabu smuggling case

GEORGE TOWN: A 56-year-old Ugandan woman was ordered by the High Court here to enter her defence to a drug-trafficking charge after the prosecution succeeded in establishing a prima facie case against her.
Nabweteme Hadija is alleged to have smuggled in 2,329gms of methamphetamine or syabu worth RM750,000 into the country, an offence tantamount to drug trafficking, at the Penang International Airport on Dec 9, 2010.

The charge under Section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Police detained the accused, a women’s accessories trader from Kampala, based on information from Thai police in Bangkok that she had filed a ‘missing baggage’ report there.
Justice Mohd Amin Firdaus Abdullah fixed Dec 13 – 14 for trial.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Amril Johari acted for the prosecution while

counsel Yagoo Subramaniam represented the accused. – Bernama
