POEM: TEMPEST TOSSED | Solomon W. Jagwe

TEMPEST  TOSSED

 Tempest tossed, I sail home
The tide I ride, filled with foam
Closer and closer to the shore
My sea beaten boat is drawn

Creaks sound loud, leaks looking wide
Gashes adorn the bow
Sails spluttered with streaks and tears
Left in the wake of unmerciful gales

Darkness engulfs, blanketing and unyielding
Peer as I might, nothingness is all I see
Groping for a foothold, sliding and tittering
Torn and shredded, my hands cannot hold

Pain, sharp jabs of shock!
My eyelids strive to keep out
Light gaining strength – warmth all around
Hope given wings – soaring and renewed

A lighthouse – graces my view
Eyes slowly opening and pain subsiding
Peace so becoming, fears assuaged
Hunger dispelled, courage restored!

Tempest tossed, my boat is no more
This tide I ride is filled with pride
Closer and closer to the lighthouse
My joy laden heart, finds Rest.

Tullow Oil makes largest oil catch | AfricaNews

Written by EDRIS KISAMBIRA

KAMPALA, UGANDA – Tullow Oil has made what it has called potentially the largest find in an eight-well drilling campaign in the Butiaba area of the Lake Albert rift basin.

With many prospects still to drill in the Butiaba area and across the basin on shore and offshore, a company statement quoted Aidan Heavey, Tullow’s chief executive officer saying the prospector is now certain that the commercial threshold for development has been exceeded.

Heavey said Tullow has assigned a dedicated team to deliver a commercial development plan for the overall basin.

In April 2008, Tullow commenced what it termed as a major drilling campaign in the Butiaba area targeting an overall reserve potential in excess of a billion barrels.

Uganda to secure $1.5b from China

Yohanes Gessesse, AfricaNews reporter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The Chinese government has approved funding of around $1.5 billion for Uganda’s vast trade zone plan near Lake Victoria. The plans are for a free trade zone of 200 square miles, which would have a major impact on country’s economy.
Chinese money would fund a new port and logistics centre, an airport, roads and telecoms infrastructure, facilities for manufacturing companies and financial services, an agriculture training centre and residential and entertainment areas.

Paradise Investment Company of the Chinese had signed an agreement last month with Ugandan partner Kagera Eco-cities, giving it a majority share in the management of the zone. Paradise Investment has drawn up a five-year plan to develop the area and around 40 Chinese companies are interested in setting up there. To read more about this story go to

UPDF hit empty LRA camps – MPs | Monitor

Yasiin Mugerwa, Risdel Kasasira & Sheila Naturinda

The Acholi Parliamentary Group yesterday accused the UPDF of bombing deserted rebel camps as opposition grew against the military offensive launched Sunday.

Addressing a press conference at Parliament yesterday, MP Mr Reagan Okumu (Aswa, FDC) said, “We have reliable information that the UPDF attacked empty camps; the LRA had left the area as the rebels had already been alerted two days before the operation.”

Citing unnamed sources, the MP added, “They could have killed innocent civilians who were abducted because the government failed to protect them. The most unfortunate thing is the indiscriminate bombardment which is going on in Congo.”

Pushed to explain the veracity of his information, Mr Okumu said, “I am the shadow minister for foreign affairs and I have sources within the UPDF, South Sudan, and Congo and in many other countries. Whoever wants to challenge this information should come out but I once again assure you that UPDF bombarded empty camps.”

Anti-LRA offensive could backfire – activists

Soldiers of the Ugandan Army in the north of the country (file photo). Activists warn the offensive will have repercussions

KAMPALA, 15 December 2008 (IRIN) – Peace activists in northern Uganda have criticised a weekend air and ground assault by the armed forces of Uganda, Southern Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) against several Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) camps in north-eastern DRC.

The activists warned the operation could derail a two-year peace process that had brought “some normalcy” to northern Uganda.

“It is unfortunate; life will be lost and that is not of any benefit to humanity,” Bishop John Baptist Odama, the Catholic Archbishop of Gulu, said. “The state we had reached was merely to agree and iron out the ICC [International Criminal Court] indictments. We thought that they will wait and then we find a better way forward.”

Nobert Mao, Gulu district council chairman and also spearheading attempts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict, expressed shock at the operation and said leaders in northern Uganda felt betrayed.

Uganda Rising

Film Synopsis

For two decades, the Acholi people of Northern Uganda have been caught in a civil war between a rebel group whose main objective is inhumane terror and a government whose military response has often increased misery and suffering. Over one and a half million people have been displaced into camps and over 25,000 children have been abducted to be used as soldiers and sex slaves.

And yet through it all, every day across Acholi-land something remarkable happens. Against a backdrop of dismal statistics, miniscule opportunity and unpredictable terror, in a part of Uganda forgotten by the world, children who have never known peace, face the day as if to live this way is normal, as if they still believe in the future. These children are the embodiment of resilience and hope. This film is the story of Uganda, her stolen children, and the fight to be free.
